I worked at QuikOrder Inc. as a user experience design intern on pizza chain digital ordering systems. During the internship, I was exposed to three projects:
* Project details are under NDA protection and not disclosed.
The Point-Of-Sale(POS) system is used by cashiers to take orders from customers. The current pizza chain POS system is a legacy system implemented twenty years ago. QuikOrder would like to provide a new design for pizza chain that is accessible, useful and customizable.
Together with another intern, I developed low-fidelity mockups, design specs and interactive prototype for new POS system, and conducted usability testing on various stages of design.
To evaluate the ordering system on current pizza chain website, I conducted comparative analysis and usability testing of 15 online ordering systems, and created a report on online ordering system usability issue.
Working at QuikOrder is a valuable experience to me, since it gives me exposure to the practical environment as a UX designer. One of the main takeaway from this internship is the importance of involving and communicating with different stakeholders along the design process. For example, when working on the POS redesign system, my initial attention is only focused on designing a specifically perfect system for the pizza chain. My mentor then pointed out, however, the company is expecting a system that is good for the pizza chain for sure, but it should also has the flexibility to be adjusted to other clients in the future. There are also other perspectives that benefit me a lot, such as reminders of patent infringement issue and debate on trade-off between design and development.
